Culver, Indiana is located in the northeastern part of the state, in Marshall County. It is situated on the shores of Lake Maxinkuckee, a large natural lake about two miles long and one mile wide. The town is nestled between two hills and surrounded by acres of farmland and forests. The area has many small creeks that flow into Maxinkuckee from the surrounding hillsides. History of Culver, Indiana
Culver, Indiana has a long and rich history that dates back to the mid-1800s. The first settlers to the area were the Potawatomi Indians who were drawn to the area for its abundant wildlife and natural resources. In 1834, a small town was established by two settlers, John Culver and William Tipton, who named it after John Culver. Over the years, a variety of businesses opened up in the town including a sawmill, a general store, and a hotel. The town was also home to several churches including the Methodist Episcopal Church and St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
In 1851, Culver was officially incorporated as a town with its first mayor being elected in 1852. Throughout this time period, many businesses continued to open up in Culver such as banks, blacksmiths, livery stables and hotels which helped support its growing population. In 1891, Culver was designated as an official railroad stop which connected it with other parts of Indiana and beyond. The town of Culver, Indiana is located in Marshall County which is part of the 7th Congressional District. As a result, the citizens of Culver are represented at the federal level by Republican Representative Jackie Walorski. At the state level, Culver is represented by Republican Senator Eric Bassler and Republican Representative Tim Brown.
At the local level, Culver has a mayor-council form of government in which a mayor and five city council members are elected to serve four-year terms. The current mayor of Culver is Mark E. Barnhart who was elected in 2015 and re-elected in 2019. The city council consists of five members: David Binkley, William Hensley, Jeff LaDow, Terry Miller and John O’Dell who are also all Republicans.
Culver also has an active political party system with both Democratic and Republican parties having a presence in the town. The Democratic Party has been active in local politics since its founding in 1856 with its first candidate being elected mayor of Culver in 1876. Since then, Democrats have held various positions within the town including several city council seats over the years as well as county commissioner positions since 2000 when Marshall County officially became a Democrat majority county.
The Republican Party on the other hand has had a presence in Culver since 1865 when it was founded but did not gain much traction until after World War II when it began to dominate local politics due to increased support from veterans who had served during that conflict and their families.
